Early Signs That You Have Lung Cancer

lung cancer

Within the next few decades, we will likely experience a change in the most common cancers in the United States. The JAMA Network Open suggests that lung cancer will fall to the country’s third most common type of cancer. Unfortunately, this disease is prevalent and harmful to your health. Around 55,000 US-based citizens get affected by this disease every year.

In the earlier stage of lung cancer, you will not experience any symptoms or drawbacks. However, the symptoms, i.e., coughing and chest pain, will eventually develop. An intelligent patient will go to the doctor straight away and look into getting rid of this disease.

Symptoms of lung cancer

You will not experience any effects or symptoms until this disease covers your lungs and other parts of your body entirely. This situation means that the condition of this disease is more severe than the rest of the life-threatening diseases.

A ratio of 67% of the infected people lives for another year after getting diagnosed with this disease. In comparison, 5% of the infected people live for a minimum of ten years after this disease. The survival rate depends upon the condition of illness and how much the body is affected. Therefore, every diagnosis can make a massive difference in the survival rate.

A cough that doesn’t go away

The US Cancer Center has paid a lot of attention to the coughing symptom regarding lung cancer. They believe that the earlier symptoms of this disease are extreme coughing that doesn’t fade away.

Once cancer starts attacking all the body organs, coughing becomes more extreme and challenging to manage. As we have seen with many other cancer types, lung cancer is another form that can result in loss of appetite and bring tiredness.

Coughing up blood

Extreme coughing is one thing, but coughing out blood (rust-colored sputum) is another. Unfortunately, we have seen this symptom appear in COVID-19 patients as well in recent times.

In this case, airway inflammation results in weak airway linings. This weakening hurts the blood vessels or capillaries that pass through it, causing the blood to come out. The fragile linings of the airway may bring further health consequences if your prescribed doctor does not take significant steps.

Chest Infection

American Cancer Society has done in-depth research regarding the relation of chest infections with lung cancer. They believe that even the most straightforward breathing practices can worsen chest infections.

Chest infections become worse with inhalation, laughing, and extreme coughing. Therefore, we can say that one symptom of this disease can eventually bring up another one.

Hoarseness

If you are experiencing the symptoms of lung cancer, there may come a time when you will experience a change in voice. Have you ever thought about becoming hoarse?

Your vocal cords create sounds that can be high-pitched or low-pitched. However, lung cancer may trigger the creation of your sound. This interference harms your vocal cords. As a result, you will not be speaking the way you usually do.

A change in pitch of your voice may indicate signs of lung cancer. However, you don’t need to worry because, at times, hoarseness may also be associated with other physical conditions such as flu or running nose. Nevertheless, you should get an appointment with your doctor and notify him about the change in your voice.

Appetite issue

A loss of appetite is something that can be very problematic regarding your nutrition and eating habits. Unfortunately, lung cancer has this symptom associated with it as well. If you have this disease, you may experience appetite problems and issues with chewing food.

This symptom is ubiquitous among cancer patients. Around 90% of the cases experience a loss of appetite at some point in their lives. In extreme cases, you should also be cautious with the treatment you are taking because they can have side effects.

Weight Loss

Many patients having lung diseases will experience a loss of weight at some point in their lives. Being unaware of your weight loss results in fatigue and body pain. In addition, you will feel sleepy more than you usually do, and that will have consequences for the rest of your life.

American Cancer Society has given an overview of the weight loss regarding this disease. They believe that if a patient experiences a weight loss of more than ten pounds, this can be the first indication of having lung disease. This symptom can appear in other forms of cancer, such as the pancreas, stomach, and esophagus. This symptom can also harm your eating habits.

Breath Shortage

Patients may wonder about the connection between the lack of breath and lung cancer. John Hopkins Research has researched breath shortage and its impact on the physical condition of a patient.

The research states that the tumor grows to block airway passages, creates pressure on the lungs, and creates a chaotic situation in your respiratory system. All of these situations harm your respiratory system and will cause difficulty in inhalation and exhalation.

There will come a time when the patient will not get enough air for his respiratory system to work correctly. In addition, lack of air will eventually hamper all his other body organs.

Fatigueness

In a few cases, feeling consistent tiredness can be a symptom of lung cancer. Unfortunately, this is another common symptom among patients who have undergone treatment of this disease.

Around 90% of the cases undergoing radiation therapy and 80% of the patients undergoing chemotherapy have experienced fatigue in their system. You will feel that you are spending most of the time lying down on your sofa regardless of having a good eating habit. Having so much fatigue in your system is not a good sign.

Infections

If you have an extreme cough or spitting out blood (a few symptoms of lung diseases that we have discussed above), it is almost imminent that you have infections in your body. Bronchitis and pneumonia are some of the illnesses that appear within lung cancer patients.

The worst aspect of these infections is that they do not go away and keep coming back into your system. This reappearing of diseases worsens your physical condition.

Wheezing

Wheezing is a symptom that may only appear due to pulmonary or cardiac factors. Pulmonary factors are associated with the lungs and may hamper your respiratory system.

Wheezing leads to dyspnea, which results in a shortage of breath and difficulty in breathing. Therefore, this is another symptom that hampers your respiratory system.

Symptoms appearing after the spreading of cancer

Numerous medical reports suggest that a patient will not experience any symptoms related to lung cancer until the disease has completely spread across the body organs. Therefore, if you are yet to experience any symptoms, inform your doctor about the condition quickly.

This prescription will result in the diagnosis of your disease in the earlier phase, creating a massive opportunity for you to overcome this cancer completely. The American Cancer Society believes that external conditions cause the initial symptoms of lung cancer.

However, it is essential not to take the risk and inform your doctor about it. He will recommend a suitable treatment if required. It would help if you looked into all the external diseases you previously had that may have caused the initial symptoms. Hence, it is crucial to be careful with every step you take regarding the treatment.

Other symptoms leading to the disease

Moreover, there are other symptoms to look into that may have caused the initiation of lung cancer. If you have a complete overview of your symptoms, you will have a clear picture of your physical condition. For example, the external symptoms could be as follows:

  • Bone pain (could be a muscle pain of any part)
  • Changes within the nervous system (such as headache, weakness, dizziness, tiredness, or loss of balance). The brain is wholly linked to these changes.
  • Eyes or skin turning yellow (jaundice). This color change harms your liver.
  • Swollen lymph nodes (such as the nodes in the neck or beyond the collarbone). This swelling hampers your immune system.

Again, you must know that if you are experiencing external symptoms like above, you are experiencing something other than lung cancer. But, you should be proactive about your health and do what you can to remove it from your system. As the symptoms are not associated with lung disease, many patients ignore it. Every condition has adverse effects. Hence, treatment should be done equally for all life-threatening diseases.

Conclusion

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, do not waste any time and contact your nearby doctor as soon as possible. They will tell you whether the LDCT (low-dose computed tomography) scans.

Around 75% of these patients reach the third or fourth stage of lung cancer. So, if a patient gets a low-dose CT screening, it will be highly beneficial to his health.

Any disease that harms your lungs is dangerous. However, there are further studies about its treatments to overcome this disease. You must have effective communication with your doctor and be up to date with your physical condition from time to time. In a COVID-19 period, it is crucial to refrain from any disease and make your environment better.
